Does Trataka improve working memory?

The short answer: possibly, but the direct evidence is small and narrower than many online claims suggest.

One 2021 repeated-measures study found that a 20-minute Trataka session improved parts of a visuospatial working-memory task in 41 healthy young adults. A 2014 trial in older adults found improved digit-span scores after 26 days of a multi-part Trataka program, although the clearest memory result was a change within the Trataka group rather than a definitive difference from the wait-list group. A 2026 study reported memory-scale changes after eight weeks, but compared two Trataka variants without a non-Trataka control.

Together, the studies justify calling Trataka promising for short-term cognitive performance. They do not prove that candle gazing improves grades, prevents dementia, creates photographic memory, or produces a lasting increase in everyday memory.

What is working memory?

Working memory is the limited mental workspace used to hold and manipulate information for a few seconds. You use it when you keep the first part of a sentence in mind while reading the end, follow several steps in a calculation, remember where objects appeared, or compare two ideas without writing them down.

It is related to attention, but the terms are not interchangeable:

  • Attention selects what receives mental resources.
  • Short-term memory briefly holds information.
  • Working memory holds information while you do something with it.
  • Long-term memory stores information over much longer periods.

A better score on a working-memory test does not automatically mean better recall days later. It may reflect a temporary change in attention, strategy, fatigue, motivation, or familiarity with the task. This is why the design and comparison condition of each study matter as much as its headline.

What did the direct Trataka studies find?

The two stronger controlled studies provide the most useful direct memory evidence:

  • Swathi, Bhat and Saoji, 2021: In 41 healthy young adults, an acute Trataka session improved selected forward Corsi task measures compared with baseline and eye exercises. The small sample had prior yoga experience, and the study did not test everyday memory or lasting change.
  • Talwadkar, Jagannathan and Raghuram, 2014: In older adults, digit span improved within the group that completed a 26-day Trataka program. The memory comparison with the wait-list group was not conclusive, 12 participants did not reach the final assessment, and the intervention combined gazing with several other practices.

The numerical results and design boundaries are unpacked below.

Study 1: immediate visuospatial working-memory performance

The 2021 study recruited 41 healthy volunteers with an average age of about 23. Most were university students, 33 were women, and all had between one and seven years of prior yoga experience, though not necessarily Trataka experience.

Participants first completed two weeks of Trataka training: 20 minutes a day, six days a week. After a one-week washout, each person completed a Trataka session and an eye-exercise comparison session on separate days. The order was randomized.

The researchers used the Corsi Block-Tapping Task. A sequence of blocks lights up on a screen, and the participant reproduces it in the same order or in reverse. Forward performance emphasizes visuospatial short-term storage. Reversing the sequence places more demand on executive manipulation.

After Trataka, the forward span increased from an average of 5.5 to 6.1 blocks, and the forward total score increased from 44.26 to 56.95. Both were significantly better than baseline and the eye-exercise session.

The backward result was less clear:

  • Backward total score improved significantly compared with baseline.
  • Backward span narrowly missed the study's corrected significance threshold compared with baseline.
  • Neither backward measure was significantly better than the eye-exercise comparison in the reported pairwise tests.

The most defensible reading is therefore specific: the study found the strongest evidence for an immediate improvement in forward visuospatial span and total performance after Trataka. It offered weaker evidence for the more executive-heavy backward condition.

The study did not measure reading comprehension, exam performance, workplace mistakes, or retention over days. It also could not tell whether repeated practice produced a lasting baseline change, because its main comparison was performance immediately after each session. Read the full 2021 study.

Study 2: one month in older adults

The 2014 study began with 60 adults aged 60 to 80. Groups were assigned using randomized blocks, with one group receiving Trataka and the other serving as a wait-list control. Forty-eight participants completed the one-month assessment: 26 in the Trataka group and 22 in the control group.

The intervention was broader than candle gazing alone. Each 30-minute session included preparatory eye movements, focused gazing, defocusing, breathing, chanting, silence and relaxation. Sessions took place for 26 days.

Researchers measured:

  • Digit Span, for short-term and working memory
  • Six Letter Cancellation, for selective attention, concentration and visual scanning
  • Trail Making Test-B, for mental flexibility and executive function

Digit-span scores improved significantly within the Trataka group after one month. However, the between-group result at the final assessment was described as a trend rather than a statistically significant difference. The stronger controlled findings concerned Trail Making Test-B, with a significant group-by-time interaction, and the letter-cancellation task, where the interaction was near the conventional significance threshold.

This study supports the possibility that a month-long Trataka program can improve performance across several cognitive tasks in older adults. It cannot isolate candle gazing from the rest of the program, and it gives less certain evidence for working memory specifically than a simple summary of “digit span improved” implies. Study 3: eight weeks of external versus internal Trataka

A 2026 study enrolled 60 healthy adults aged 20 to 35. Thirty practiced Bahya Trataka, using an external candle flame, and 30 practiced Aabhyantara Trataka, visualizing an internal point of light with closed eyes. Both groups practiced for 15 minutes over an eight-week period.

The researchers used the PGI Memory Scale, which includes recent and remote memory, attention and concentration, delayed and immediate recall, visual retention, recognition and other subtests. Scores improved within both groups, and the internal-visualization group had larger changes on selected subtests and the total score.

This adds a longer-duration memory signal, but it is difficult to interpret causally. There was no inactive, wait-list or attention-matched control group, so retesting, expectation, time and other nonspecific effects cannot be separated from Trataka. The study also compared many subtests, did not establish a persistent effect after practice ended, and cannot show that internal Trataka is better than no intervention. Read the 2026 study.

What do attention studies add?

Several Trataka studies measure attention or inhibition rather than working memory. They are relevant because working memory depends partly on keeping distractions from displacing the information being held, but they should not be relabeled as memory studies.

A 2016 repeated-measures study tested 30 healthy young men with the Stroop color-word task after Trataka and a control session. Performance was better after Trataka, which the authors interpreted as improved selective attention, cognitive flexibility and response inhibition. Raghavendra and Singh, 2016

A randomized study in adolescents also reported improved Stroop performance after a Trataka intervention compared with routine activity. The available abstract does not provide enough procedural and numerical detail to estimate the size or durability of the effect. Sherlee and David, 2020

These findings make an attention-based explanation plausible. They still do not show that Trataka transfers to long-term learning or everyday remembering.

How might a gaze practice affect working memory?

A plausible explanation starts with attentional control rather than a special property of candlelight.

During Trataka, you repeatedly keep attention on one visual target, detect drift and return. Working-memory performance can suffer when irrelevant thoughts or stimuli compete with the information being maintained. A brief period of structured focus could temporarily reduce that competition or put the participant into a more task-ready state.

There is supporting evidence from a different practice. In a small randomized study of meditation novices, 15 minutes of breath-focused attention was followed by better Reading Span Test performance and increased activation in prefrontal regions associated with top-down control. That was not a Trataka study, so it supports the broader focused-attention mechanism rather than proving how visual gazing works. Yamaya et al., 2021

Researchers have also proposed roles for oculomotor control, the frontal eye fields, visual-attention networks and reduced mind-wandering. A 2025 systematic review presents these as hypotheses and emphasizes the small number of trials, moderate methodological quality and inconsistent protocols. No Trataka neuroimaging study has yet demonstrated that one of these pathways causes the observed working-memory result. Roj et al., 2025

What can we honestly claim today?

The current evidence supports four careful statements:

  1. A 20-minute Trataka session improved selected Corsi task measures in one small study of healthy, yoga-experienced young adults.
  2. A 26-day, multi-component Trataka program was followed by improved digit-span performance within a group of older adults.
  3. An eight-week study found memory-scale changes in two Trataka groups, but lacked a non-Trataka control.
  4. Separate small studies report changes in attention and inhibitory-control tasks that could be relevant to working-memory performance.

The evidence does not yet establish that Trataka:

  • improves long-term memory or learning retention
  • raises academic grades or professional performance
  • treats mild cognitive impairment, dementia, ADHD or another condition
  • creates a permanent increase in working-memory capacity
  • works at the same dose for every age group
  • outperforms sleep, exercise, medical care or established cognitive interventions

A laboratory-task signal can be useful without being a universal outcome claim.

Does the research protocol match a short home session?

Not exactly.

The young-adult study used two weeks of supervised-style training followed by a 20-minute test session containing ten minutes of eye exercises and ten minutes of candle gazing, visualization and quiet completion. The older-adult study used 30-minute sessions with several components for 26 days.

A two- or five-minute gaze may still be useful as a transition into demanding work, but the direct studies cannot tell us whether that shorter dose changes working-memory performance. How can you test whether it helps your real work?

Avoid taking the same online memory test immediately before and after every session. Repetition alone can improve the score.

Instead, run a simple alternating-day experiment for two weeks:

  1. Choose one repeatable task, such as reading technical material, solving practice problems or drafting from an outline.
  2. On alternating days, do a short Trataka session or sit quietly for the same duration.
  3. Keep the task, time of day, caffeine and phone setup as similar as practical.
  4. Record one outcome that matters: uninterrupted minutes, number of times you reread instructions, completed problems, or facts recalled the next day.
  5. Compare the median result across the two conditions after at least five sessions of each.

This will not produce clinical evidence, but it is more informative than relying on a vivid feeling after one session. Students can use the more detailed seven-day Trataka concentration experiment when study initiation and phone distraction are the main problems.

What safety limits matter?

Working-memory research is not a reason to force the eyes open. Blink naturally, stop if you feel pain, and keep the target at a comfortable distance. A black dot or stable digital target avoids flame and flicker when those are inappropriate.

People with glaucoma, recent eye surgery, significant retinal conditions, persistent dry eye, or photosensitive epilepsy should seek relevant professional guidance or avoid flame-based practice. Trataka is an attention practice, not a treatment for memory loss. New or worsening memory problems deserve clinical assessment rather than self-treatment with a gaze exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Does candle gazing improve memory?

One small study found improved visuospatial working-memory task performance immediately after a trained Trataka session. Another trial found improved digit span within an older-adult Trataka group after one month. A newer eight-week study found memory-scale changes but lacked a non-Trataka control. That is promising but does not establish a broad or lasting improvement in everyday memory.

Is the evidence about working memory or long-term memory?

Mostly working memory and short-term cognitive task performance. The direct Trataka studies did not test whether people retained learned material over weeks or months.

Can Trataka help students remember what they study?

That specific outcome has not been tested. Trataka may help some students settle attention before studying, but active retrieval, spaced practice, sleep and suitable study conditions remain the better-supported tools for long-term learning.

How long did participants practice in the studies?

The 2021 study used two weeks of 20-minute training sessions before the experimental comparisons. The 2014 study used 30-minute sessions for 26 days. The 2026 study compared 15-minute Trataka variants over eight weeks. Those protocols do not establish an optimal dose or prove that a very short session produces the same cognitive result.

Is the effect permanent?

No direct study has shown a permanent working-memory change from Trataka. The 2021 result was immediate, and the 2014 trial followed participants for one month.

Can Trataka treat dementia or memory impairment?

There is not enough evidence to support that claim. The older-adult study involved cognitively healthy participants and was not a dementia-treatment trial.

Bottom line

Trataka has a real but early working-memory signal. The strongest direct evidence is an immediate improvement in forward visuospatial task performance in one small repeated-measures study. An older-adult trial adds a longer-duration signal, but its memory comparison is less decisive and its intervention combined several practices. A 2026 study broadens the outcomes measured while weakening causal confidence because every participant received a Trataka intervention.

That is enough reason to study Trataka more carefully and to test it as a personal focus routine. It is not enough reason to call it a proven memory enhancer.
